Legacy of Service in Special Education: Honoring Chileen Spaulding

The Superintendent Council and WOCCSE SELPA recently had the privilege of recognizing and celebrating Chileen Spaulding for her incredible career and lasting contributions to the field of special education as she prepares for retirement at the end of the 2025–2026 school year.

Throughout her years of service, Chileen has led with compassion, steadiness, and an unwavering commitment to students, families, and staff. Her impact has been felt not only within Ocean View School District, but across the entire SELPA community through her leadership, collaboration, and genuine care for others.

Chileen’s career journey reflects a lifelong dedication to supporting students with diverse learning needs. Her work has included serving as an Education Specialist in New York, an Autism Specialist in Newport Mesa Unified School District, Special Education Coordinator in Ocean View School District, and ultimately Director of Special Education in Ocean View School District. In every role, she brought both expertise and heart to the work.

In 2021, Chileen was recognized as the ACSA Region 17 Special Education Administrator of the Year, an especially meaningful honor during one of the most challenging periods in education. At a time when schools and systems were navigating unprecedented change during the COVID-19 pandemic, her leadership stood out for its innovation, flexibility, calm presence, and unwavering focus on supporting students and staff through uncertainty.

While Chileen’s professional accomplishments are significant, those who know her often speak first about who she is as a person. She is known for being one of the kindest individuals you will ever meet, someone who always checks in on others, offers support with a smile, and makes people feel valued and cared for. Her ability to lead with both strength and compassion has left a lasting impression on colleagues, families, and students alike.

Chileen’s leadership, compassion, and steady commitment have strengthened programs, built community, and improved outcomes for countless students throughout her career. Her legacy is one of service, advocacy, and genuine care for others.

Although we are excited for Chileen to enjoy a well deserved retirement, many of us are already joking that we are ready for her to come back and sub for us. Of course, we will give her at least six months to enjoy retirement first. Her presence, leadership, and kindness will truly be missed.

On behalf of the Superintendent Council and WOCCSE SELPA, we thank Chileen for her many years of dedication and service to the special education community. We are grateful for the difference she has made across the SELPA and wish her all the best in this next chapter of retirement.
